From May 18 to 20, 2005 (B.E. 2548), the World Buddhist Leaders Conference on the International Recognition of Vesak Day convened at two significant venues: Buddhamonthon in Nakhon Pathom and, for the first time, the United Nations Conference Centre in Bangkok, Thailand. This expanded celebration attracted distinguished participants from twenty-one countries and regions, marking a substantial increase in international representation from the previous year. Maha- chulalongkornrajavidyalaya University served as the principal host institution, receiving substantial support from the Royal Thai Government and auspicious blessings from the Supreme Sangha Council.
The celebration articulated two primary objectives: first, to cultivate profound mutual understanding and strengthen cooperation among all Buddhist traditions, organizations, and individuals through sustained dialogue and collaborative engagement among Buddhist leaders and scholars worldwide; and second, to formally recognize
Buddhamonthon in Thailand as the centre of world Buddhism, entrusting it with the pivotal role of coordinating interactions between Buddhist institutions globally and advancing the systematic dissemination of authoritative Dhamma resources across diverse cultural contexts.
To disseminate the universal message of peace firmly rooted in the Buddha’s profound teachings of wisdom and compassion, the assembled dignitaries reached unanimous consensus on the following resolutions in their Joint Communiqué:
- Decided to increase and enhance cooperation amongst all schools of Buddhism to promote unity and solidarity among Buddhists,
- Agreed to develop education so as to promote mutual understanding, respect and inner peace amongst individuals and communities,
- Noted to create a spiritual network by using modern science and technology for strengthening moral and ethical development among all young Buddhists,
- Ensured to work for humanitarian and social development without prejudice for the benefit of humanity,
- Endeavored to protect Buddhism and its sublime teachings in order to maintain its universal values,
- Agreed to support other countries and districts to hold International Buddhist Conferences, and support the World Forum on Buddhism to be held in China.
- Decided to continue United Nations Day of Vesak Celebration in Thailand, with Buddhamonthon recognized as the Centre of World Buddhism, and Maha- chulalongkornrajavidyalaya University to be a coordinator of the Celebrations.
