Ven. Prof. Dr. Jinwol Lee

Most Venerable Prof. Dr. Jinwol Y. H. Lee is a Korean Buddhist monk, Zen master, scholar, and international Buddhist leader affiliated with the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism, the largest traditional Mahāyāna Buddhist order in South Korea. He practices Seon (Korean Zen) meditation and has been dedicated to Buddhist practice since the late 1960s.

He is Chair Professor of the Department of Seon (Chan/Zen) Studies at Dongguk University’s Gyeongju campus, where he teaches Buddhist meditation, culture, and philosophy. He previously served as a professor of Buddhist Studies at the Seoul Graduate School of Buddhism and as Dean of Religious Affairs of Dongguk University.

Ven. Dr. Jinwol Lee earned multiple advanced degrees abroad, including a Master of Arts in Religious Studies from the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa (1990) and a Ph.D. in Buddhist Studies from the University of California, Berkeley (1998).

He has held leadership roles in major global religious and Buddhist organizations. He is a Vice President of the World Fellowship of Buddhists (WFB), a long-standing international Buddhist organization, and has served as President of the United Religions Initiative (URI) Korea Multiple Cooperation Circle as well as a trustee of the URI Global Council, emphasizing interfaith cooperation. He was also a member of the Presidential Commission on Sustainable Development in South Korea and continues active engagement in interreligious dialogue and peace initiatives.

Prof. Dr. Jinwol Lee has published scholarly works on Korean Buddhism and Mahāyāna thought and is widely respected for his contributions to Buddhist education, meditation practice, and global Buddhist collaboration.
