Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien is a senior Vietnamese Buddhist monk and leader within the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha, serving as Vice President and General Secretary of its Executive Council. He is widely recognized for his role in advancing Buddhism both domestically and internationally, including activities that strengthen cultural and religious cooperation between Vietnam and other countries.
He gained international recognition in 2018 when he was awarded the Padma Shri, one of India’s highest civilian honors, in recognition of his contributions to religion and efforts to enhance Buddhist cooperation and ties between Vietnam and India — making him the first Vietnamese recipient of this award.
In addition to this honor, Most Venerable Thich Duc Thien has been honored with the Goodwill Ambassador Medal from the Congress of the Leaders of World and Traditional Religions for his work promoting interfaith dialogue, peace, and cultural diplomacy.
He has also played key roles in major global Buddhist events, such as the United Nations Day of Vesak celebrations, where he has helped facilitate international participation and highlight Vietnam’s commitment to religious freedom and cooperation.
